Throughout her painting practice, LA-based painter Becky Kolsrud (b. Los Angeles, CA, 1984) explores art historical and vernacular depictions of the human form—namely women—throughout advertisements, signage, bather paintings, Japanese prints, and surrealist dreamscapes. Precise lines and loose brushwork engage painting’s illusory history as well as the inherent physical qualities of the picture plane. Kolsrud destabilizes conventions that recur in these prominent visual histories, reassembling their parts into lushly rendered patterns, otherworldly beings, and imagined landscapes and forms that verge on the abstract.

Kolsrud has had solo exhibitions at Morán Morán, Los Angeles, CA, JTT in New York, NY, Tif Sigfrids in Athens, GA, Phil Gallery in LA, and Karma in New York, NY. Recently she was included in group exhibitions at the Asia Art Center in Taipei, TW and the Karpidas Collection in Dallas, TX (both 2021). In 2019, JTT presented a solo booth of her work at Art Basel Hong Kong, and later that year her paintings were featured in an exhibition at the Atlanta Contemporary, GA. She has exhibited widely both in the US and abroad, including at CFHill in Stockholm, Stephen Friedman in London, Jessica Silverman Gallery in San Francisco, and Magenta Plains, New York, among many others. Her work has been featured in many publications including Vogue, the New Yorker, Cultured, and Interview Magazine. She holds an MFA in painting from UCLA.
