Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié
Paris 1735 - 1784
55,7 x 45,2 cm ; 21⅞ by 17¾ in.
Although Nicolas Bernard Lépicié really wanted to be known as a painter of ‘grands genres’ – he trained in the workshop of the history painter Carle Van Loo and was admitted to the Académie in 1764 – his success with the public nevertheless came from intimate domestic scenes whose gentle nostalgia is reminiscent of Chardin’s poetry of the senses.
This portrait, whose model unfortunately remains a mystery, is signed and dated 1772. It expresses the typical delicacy of Lépicié’s portraits: a light and vibrant brushstroke of white, pink and grey befits the tender and melancholic expression of the model.
--------------------------------------------------------
