Description

Federico Zuccaro

Sant' Angelo in Vado, Marches 1540/42 - 1609 Ancona

A man before a Roman Temple, with a statue of Jupiter

Pen and brown ink and wash, over traces of black chalk, within a brown ink framing line, the corners cut;

bears an old attribution in black chalk on the remains of the old album page, recto: Zuchero and bears numbering in brown ink on the old album page, verso: No 11863

124 by 127 mm; 4 7/8 by 5 in

Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), London (L.2093);
Unidentified collector's mark, perhaps English (L.2925);
Dr. Rocca-Serra, Paris

Although it has not been possible to connect the present work with a known project, the lively penwork and application of wash are both absolutely typical of Federico's graphic style.

Whilst the circular format, by definition, lends itself to a roundel design, the intimate scale might also suggest that this drawing was created in preparation for a medal.
