At the age of twenty, in 1788, Hendrik Voogd, who had trained in Amsterdam with Jurriaen Andriessen, travelled to Rome, never to return to his native land. During his earlier years in Italy, the artist's drawings are faithfully topographical, and frequently annotated with the precise location, date and time of their execution, but during the first years of the 19th century he began to depict the buildings and countryside around his adoptive city with greater freedom and spontaneity. It is to this period that the present drawing should presumably be allocated.

Although Voogd's activity as an artist was recorded, as were a few paintings, his drawing style was almost entirely unknown until the appearance of a substantial group of drawings, which emerged in the 1950s from the Schimmelpenninck van der Oye collection at Kasteel Duivenvoorde. See, for example, the view of the Colosseum, formerly in the collection of Saam and Lily Nijstad.1
