Francis Nicholson was born and raised in Yorkshire and for a time lived in Knaresborough. Between 1792 and 1803 he lived in London and he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789. He found success as a landscape painter and was patronised by important figures, including James Stewart, 1st Marquess of Bute and Turner’s later patron, Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall, Yorkshire. In 1804 Nicholson became a founder member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours of which he was elected president in December 1812. According to the inscription on the verso, this watercolour was drawn in 1794.
