Between 1720 and 1724 Arthur Pond was a pupil of John Vanderbank at the St Martin’s Lane Academy. In 1725 he travelled to Rome with the painter George Knapton. There, he was exposed to the Italian masters and also to the work of the pioneering pastellist Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757).

Pond was back in London by 1727 where he took the lease on a house, previously occupied by Sir Geoffrey Kneller, in Covent Garden and established himself as a fashionable portrait painter. He also built up a reputation as a connoisseur and picture dealer. For further information on Arthur Pond see: N. Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800, online edition.
