Description

Château Mouton Rothschild 1945

Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé

u. t/hs, label very slightly soiled and slightly faded, but excellent for age, bought in Christie's sale 30.06.1983

Label Artist: Victory Year (Philippe Julian)

What more can be said about this wine other than it is extraordinary and not very much was made! Incredibly haunting bouquet of flavoured coffee, cloves and cinnamon. Raspberries (utterly surprising), gingerbread, blackcurrants and mint all battle on the palate with coffee and chocolate lining up to get in on the act. It finishes in such elegant fashion - so silky and so seamless. This is not a banal, huge wine, it is just a totally complete Claret, perhaps the greatest ever. In 2019, amazing, essence-like aromas of black fruits and liquorice - so precise. The flavours follow through from the bouquet. It still has wonderful concentration and freshness - a miracle of nature, seemingly eternal. Provenance:

An outstanding collection of blockbuster wine, comprising the best of Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône, in rock-solid condition, put together by a bon viveur and true aficionado. Recently removed from a town cellar and the cellar of a beautiful country house, both temperature controlled, the collection centers around benchmark mature vintages of Bordeaux, such as 1982, 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1990, together with Burgundy from the likes of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Rousseau, Ramonet and de Vogüé, together with sumptuous Rhône offerings of Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape, Côte Rôtie and Hermitage from Chave and Jaboulet. Mostly available in full cases, in bottles and magnums, and in original packaging, the quality of the storage is reflected in the superb overall condition of the wine.
