The Qing love affair with glass extended to its use in imitating other materials and the Tuyet Nguyet and Stephen Markbreiter Collection has several interesting examples, such as the swirled glass bottle in the present lot, which imitates chalcedony with brown splashes and dates to the mid-Qing period 1780-1850, when the snuff bottle was beginning to move away from its Imperial roots to seek a wider acceptance.

For other imitation examples in the collection, see lot 1029 a white nephrite-imitation glass bottle and lot 1055 an aragonite-imitation glass bottle.
