Description

Manner of Pieter Bruegel the Elder

A bagpipe player

oil on panel

panel: 19¼ by 15½ in.; 48.9 by 39.4 cm.

framed: 25⅞ by 21⅝ in.; 65.7 by 54.9 cm.

Private collection, Europe, until recently.

The bagpipe player in this small panel is inspired by a detail in the lower right corner of Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Wedding Dance of 1566 (Detroit Institute of Arts, inv. no. 30.374). The many copies and versions known of this composition are a testament to its popularity, and comparable details of bagpipe players are visible in examples in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp (inv. no. 973) and another recorded as having formerly been in the Depot at the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin.1
