Description

Bartolomé de las Casas

Narratio regionum indicarum per Hispanos quosdam devastatarum verissima... iam vero denuo iconibus illustrata edita est. Oppenheim: Hieronymus Galler for Johann-Theodor de Bry, 1614

4to (200 x 149mm.), title within engraved pictorial border, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, engraved illustrations in the text by Theodor de Bry, late eighteenth-century citron morocco, gilt fillet border, spine gilt in compartments, a few deckle edges

A Latin translation of Las Casas's condemnation of the Spanish atrocities inflicted upon the inhabitants of the New World. The graphic and horrific illustrations first appeared in the 1598 de Bry edition and helped to cement the ideas of Spanish cruelty held by other European nations.
