Stylistically this enchanting Cupid is characteristic of the rather naive bronze fountain statuettes that were made in 16th-century southern Germany, primarily in Nuremberg and Augsburg. With its heavy engraving of facial features, stylised anatomy, and the addition of a necklace, the putto compares particularly well with a fountain figure of Venus in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. no. 1982.60.120.
