Description
A gilt metal and silver octagonal equinoctial pocket sundial and compass, early 18th century octagonal-form engraved plate, inset compass, hinged hour ring, pin gnomon and hinged latitude arc engraved 0-90°, with three concentric chapters rings engraved from the interior outwards, twice 1-12 The next similarly engraved, and the last engraved 1- 29, the bezel finely engraved with stylized foliate scrolls, inset with compass, the reverse engraved with European cities and their corresponding latitudes, the base further signed Nicolaus Rugendas, Augusta 48.
Nicolaus Rugendas III (1665-1745) is listed in Baillie, Watch and Clockmakers of the World second edition, 1947, as working in Augsburg where a sundial is noted by him in the Stuttgardt Museum.The Rugendas family were primarily known as prominent clockmakers in Augsburg during the 17th and 18th centuries.
