Conceived in 1881.
Upon moving to New York City in 1881, Elihu Vedder turned to the decorative arts as a source of income. While he made greeting cards, stained glass, tiles and more, his firebacks were some of his most successful works. Japanese Dragon and two other designs (Sun God and Soul of the Sun Flower) were put into limited production by John G. Low's Chelsea Tile Works.
Vedder's design for Japanese Dragon was modeled and reproduced in cast iron first by Charles Caryl Coleman, Vedder's close friend and fellow artist. It was later cast by Smith and Anthony.
