Sir Reginald Cathcart of Carleton, 6th Bt (1838–1916), according to a label on the verso of the frame;

Anonymous sale, Gleneagles, Sotheby's, 28 August 1970, lot 252.

Here, Roberts depicts the city of his birth from below Carlton Hill. He looks west towards the North Bridge, the newly created Princes Gardens and the ancient Castle. The setting sun bathes the scene in a golden light.

 

Another view of the city, seen from the west and dated 1821 was exhibited at the Barbican Centre, London in 1986–87.1 The National Gallery of Scotland holds a view from the Castle looking east that dates to circa 1846.2
