Allegory of America

Pen and grey ink and light reddish wash;

210 by 155 mm

Private collection, Paris

The continent of America is represented by a seated woman in an exotic alcove raised from the ground, wearing a plumed turban and touching a lamb with her left hand. On the other side stands a peacock. Below her, to the left, is a marine view with a swan and tambourines, and, as in the representation of Asia (see the previous lot), there is a quiver of arrows to the right. Gillot's interest in exotic and ornamental details is abundantly manifested in this appealing series of allegories.

See note to previous lot.
