Gold, silver-gilt and gem set watch fob, circa 1910


The chain supporting an oval locket inscribed 'WIEN 15. MAI 1900' opening onto a photograph of Archduchess Maria Immaculata of Austria-Tuscany and a lock of hair; a heart-shaped locket set with a round ruby, sapphire and emerald, decorated with the Latin numeral X set with rose diamonds, inscribed 'Maria 29. October 1910' opening onto a lock of hair; a locket inscribed 'Weihnachten 1914' opening onto a miniature portrait of Archduchess Maria Immaculata of Austria-Tuscany; and a locket designed as a leaf, length approximately 550mm, Austrian assay mark for gold.

The lockets on this watch fob commemorate milestones in the marriage of Robert, Duke of Württemberg (1873-1947) and Archduchess Maria Immaculata of Austria-Tuscany (1878-1968). The locket inscribed 'WIEN 15. MAI 1900' probably commemorates their engagement, it opens onto a photograph of the Archduchess wearing her five strand pearl necklace (lot 1082). The locket featuring the Latin numeral X with the inscription 'Maria 29. October 1910' commemorates their tenth wedding anniversary. The locket inscribed 'Weihnachten 1914' commemorates Christmas 1914, it opens onto a photograph of the Archduchess wearing her pearl choker (lot 1077).
