The sitter was the eldest son of Richard Robartes, who had been knighted in 1616, created a Baronet in 1621 and raised to the peerage, as Baron Robartes, in 1625. Sir John fought with the parliamentarians during the Civil War, however he was horrified by the execution of the King in 1649. During the Commonwealth he retired to his family seat at Lanhydrock House, Cornwall. In 1679, having re-entered court, he was created Viscount Bodmin and Earl of Radnor by Charles II.
