The sitter was one of nine children of Frederick, Elector of Saxony and Maria Antonia of Bavaria. She was a great granddaughter of Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor. In 1774 in Dresden, she married Charles Zweibrucken-Birkenfold, who succeeded as Duke of Zweibrucken the following year. In this portrait the duchess is wearing the Bavarian Order of Saint Elizabeth.
