The Finding of Moses
signed: A. FRILLI. S.A. / FIRENZE
light grey marble
113 by 76cm., 44½ by 30in.
Antonio Frilli founded his eponymous gallery in Florence in 1860 and specialised in producing decorative works for the international market. He was one of many Italian artists of the 19th century who executed copies after Ancient, Renaissance and Neoclassical compositions, but also invented original works including this impressively carved marble, which is inspired by a biblical theme, the finding of Moses. Another marble of the same model was sold in these rooms, Sotheby's London, July 2002, lot 161. His model is also illustrated by Panzetta (op. cit.).
