A Greek Terracotta Head of a Goddess

Magna Graecia circa late 6th/early 5th Century B.C


with serene expression, her wavy hair parted in the center and falling in long braids behind the ears, a polos formerly on the crown of her head.

Height 16.5 cm.

Private collection, England, a gift in 1960 from E.H. Goddard, Esq.
English private collection (Christie’s, London, April 26th, 2012, no. 247, illus.)
E.H. Goddard was headmaster of Haberdashers’ Aske  Boys School from 1932 to 1961. Previously he had been Head of Classics at Bradford Boys Grammar School. Lewis and Goddard Greek and Latin textbooks were used in many schools throughout the world.
