The Property of a Gentleman
A Large Hellenistic Terracotta Figure of Eros
circa early 2nd Century B.C.
the youthful god in a lively pose as if alighting, and pouring from an oinochoe in his raised right hand into a clam shell held in the left, the missing wings formerly attached behind the shoulders, and wearing high-soled sandals, short mantle over his left shoulder, and wreath of ivy leaves and berries, his hair parted in the center and falling in spiral tresses over the nape of the neck, the remaining polychrome ornament including red on the sandals, wreath, and lips, blue and gilding on the wreath, and black detail on the eyes.
