AN OTTOMAN ENGRAVED TINNED-COPPER EWER, TURKEY, 16TH CENTURY


the body of pyriform shape on a short splayed foot, with curvilinear spout and handle, both with dragon-head terminals, hinged lid, the body engraved with cloud-form designs entwined with split-palmette vines, protruding floral motifs to each side

A close example, attributed to sixteenth century Ottoman Syria and associated with use in an upper-class household, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. no.1975.41 (see Petsopoulos 1982. p.30, ill. pl.10).
