Painted in the early 1880s, the present work was likely executed in John Butler Yeats' studio on York Street, Dublin, where the artist had taken up residence on his return from London. It relates closely to another example sold in Yeats: The Family Collection at Sotheby's, 27 September 2017, lot 34.
