Following in the footsteps of her father, the celebrated painter Jules Breton, Virginie Demont-Breton found inspiration for her own compositions in the lives of fishermen and their families in Wissant, near Calais. The artist began Au pays bleu in 1891 and completed the work shortly before the 1892 Salon des Artistes Français. Demont-Breton's daughter Adrienne, aged four, served as the model for the little girl. Her Irish Setter Musette was the model for the dog.
