Annick and Didier Masseau, L’escalier de cristal : le luxe à Paris (1809-1923), Saint-Rémy-en-l’Eau, 2021, p.156

The design of the carp in this vase is most likely borrowed from an engraving in a manual by Kuwagata Keisai, a painter-engraver of the Edo period, published in 1813. The carp facing us has the same lines and movement as in the Japanese artist's work. This vase was made for L'Escalier de Cristal, a prestigious Parisian store that fostered the development of Japonism following Japan's participation in the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
