Johannes Kuveeenis (or Cuvenis) the Elder was born in Bremen. He was mainly active in The Hague and became a member of the painter’s guild there in 1650. He is known for a compact corpus of still lifes.

The present work is signed and dated 1645, making it his earliest known painting, along with another work which shares similar elements, sold at Christie’s, Amsterdam, 7 November 2007, lot 20.¹
