Victor Mahu was the son of Cornelis Mahu (1613-89), who was also his teacher. Mahu specialised in genre painting and mainly depicted large interior scenes populated with dancers, drinkers, and musicians. His work was influenced by artists of the previous generation, notably Adriaen van Ostade (1610-85), Adriaen Brouwer (1605-38), and David Teniers the Younger (1610-90).

The present work shares compositional similarities with another interior by Mahu, sold at the Dorotheum, Vienna, 14 December 2010,1 where the same male figure is depicted walking through the door in the background.
