The present example is a highly collectible F.P. Journe thanks to the early brass movement and low case number, which are both revealed on the back. F.P. Journe was established in 1999 and during the first few years of existence, the movements were made of brass, such as the very early present example from 2001. Early production figures were low and research estimates an overall production of only 2'000 brass movements, making them highly demanded on the market today. Starting in 2004, all subsequent movements were made of gold.
According to our research, the present example belongs to the very first generation of this model. What distinguishes these earliest brass movement iterations from subsequent ones is the straight-line Côtes de Genève finishing as opposed to the later rounded one. It appears that only a little more than 100 pieces were produced with the straight-line Côtes de Genève finishing making this a super rare specimen.
The golden dial is of beautiful design and texture, featuring an early seconds hand with thicker counterweight, as opposed to the thinner ones used for later gold movement watches or likely as replacement parts during servicing.
The Octa Reserve de Marche, such as the present example, was the first model produced in series with this calibre and marked the beginning of the successful Octa collection. The name Octa means eight in Latin, a dear language for Francois Paul Journe as his moto testifies. Eight is the symbol of infinity and perpetuity. It was chosen by the master watchmaker to identify his first automatic movement, the calibre 1300. This calibre was introduced in 2001 and is the base of every automatic watch he has created since then.
Early watches from F.P. Journe are the most sought-after pieces by collectors. This specimen was made in 2001, the very year of its introduction. It was sold by the Antwerp based retailer Ginotti. This provenance is important for collectors as he was one of the few and first ones to support FP Journe at his very beginning. The watch is further preserved in attractive condition and accompanied by its original accessories.
