Description

FLORENTINE SCHOOL, CIRCA 1480/90

THE ANGEL GABRIEL

oil on panel transferred to canvas

canvas: 12¼ by 8⅝ in.; 31.2 by 22 cm.

framed: 16¼ by 12½ in.; 41.3 by 31.8 cm.

Although infrared reflectography of this painting reveals a lively underdrawing, scholars have not been able to reach a consensus regarding its attribution. The pose and draperies of the angel are reminiscent of works attributed to Raffaellino del Garbo (1466–1524), a pupil of Filippino Lippi (ca. 1457-1504). The figure of the angel closely relates to a cartoon Raffaellino did for an embroidery now in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.1
