Released to great anticipation in Basel 2010, the Ref. 5170 was the first men’s wristwatch from Patek Philippe to feature their own in-house designed and manufactured chronograph movement, cal. CH 29-535 PS. The movement required five years to develop and although based on a traditional column wheel design featured six new patents. The case was very reminiscent of the vintage Ref. 530 and smaller Ref. 130 chronographs that were themselves based on the classic Calatrava model. The Ref. 5170 was fitted with a silvered dial and the first production chronograph from the company to have a pulsations scale as standard.
