A pair of George I gilt-gesso and giltwood pier mirrors

circa 1715-25, attributed to John Belchier


each with arched rectangular later mirror plate within a foliate and ribbon border with a lattice ground and egg-and-dart outer border and headed by an acanthus clasp, the whole surmounted by a scrolling acanthus cresting flanked by two wyvern, the cresting decorated with lozenges, scrolling tendrils and acanthus on a punched ground, the sides with bell-flowers garlands and scrolled acanthus to lower corners centred by a shaped acanthus cresting 

228cm. high, 73.5cm. wide; 7ft. 5¾in., 2ft. 5in.

Probably supplied to William Herbert, 2nd Marquess of Powis (1660-1745) for Powis House, Great Ormond Street, London;
by descent to his grand-daughter, Barbara Herbert who married Henry Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Powis (1703-1772) in 1751;
thence by descent to George Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis (1755-1801);
thence by descent through Lady Henrietta Antonia Herbert (1758-1830) who in 1784 married Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis by the third creation (1754-1839), eldest son of Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive ("Clive of India");
to Edward Herbert (Clive), 2nd Earl of Powis (1785-1848), as heir to his uncle he inherited the Powis Castle estates on condition that he assume the name and arms of Herbert only, in lieu of those of Clive, which he did by Royal licence on 9 March 1807;
thence by descent to George Herbert, 4th Earl of Powis (1862-1952) and thence by direct descent to the current owner.
