Property of a British Private Collector
A very fine and important month-going walnut longcase regulator, John Harrison and John Jefferys, London, circa 1748
altered 12-inch dial with rococo spandrels, the silvered centre with minute ring enclosing seconds dial and hours sector and inscribed: Sub Auspicijs, Johannis Harrison, Mechanici longe Prastantissimi, et Decoris et Opprobrii, Britanniae; Fecit, Johannis Jefferies, Vir Bonae Indolis et Industrius 1748; Restauravit Josephus Barber, Artifex Peritissimus, 1768, London, the arch with a silvered thermometer sector engraved with a Fahrenheit scale from 28º to 83º and remarks, the massive six pillar movement with altered five wheel high count train, deadbeat escapement with jewelled pallets and bolt and shutter maintaining power, the grid-iron pendulum with large lenticular bob and graduated rating nut oscillating against a silvered beat plaque, the bi-metallic thermometer within the case, the movement supported on a wrought-iron frame with secondary support to the back cock, oak dust cover, the case with broken-arch moulded cornice above brass-capped fluted hood pillars, broken-arch trunk door and crossbanded plinth, the whole with boxwood and ebony stringing
