Description

Royal Interest

An Elizabeth II parcel-gilt silver royal snuff box

Dingley Bros, Birmingham

1967

in early 19th century style, applied with intertwined initials A below coronet for a grandchild of the sovereign, inside of hinged cover inscribed Alexandra Angus with our warmest wishes, gilt interior

7.7cm., 3in. wide

The inscription refers to Princess Alexandra, Lady Ogilvy and her husband, Sir Angus Ogilvy (1928-2004), who were married in 1963. The box was given by them to Lord Charteris (1913-1999), then Assistant and from 1972 to 1977 Private Secretary to H.M. The Queen. A most appropriate souvenir for a man who, as Richard Tomlinson of the Independent remembered him, 'cared little about his dress, trailing snuff down his shirt-front with . . . insouciance.' (27 December 1999)
