The American jewellers Charlton & Co. founded their business in 1909 in New York and quickly grew their reputation as purveyors of the finest Art Deco jewels and objects. They were able to achieve such success thanks to their excellent connections to France, as well as their patronage of Edward, Prince of Wales. The company employed Maurice Duvalet, a French designer, who would make frequent trips to Paris to note the latest jewellery trends on the continent, which Americans were keen to follow. Further securing their name for exceptional craftsmanship, Charlton & Co. would often retail pieces sourced from exceptional French workshops such as Verger Frères, as we see in the above example. Verger Frères supplied many of the major jewellery houses of the Art Deco period.
