The version captured by this model is the S.E.5a, which was developed shortly after production of the original S.E.5, integrating a more powerful engine. The specific unit detailed was flown in France circa 1917 by Spencer Bertram Horn, an ace with the RAF.

The ratio depicted on the model (1:2:3) did
not come into use until June 1947.
