The Ivor Novello awards are presented for excellence in composition and songwriting. While previously the awarding body had been focused on Jazz musicians, by 1964 the Beatles dominated the award ceremony, with Lennon and McCartney receiving four nominations, including two nominations in the same category, as well as a Special Award for Outstanding Services to British Music. 

The present statue was awarded was for 'The 'A' Side of the Record Issued in 1964 Which Achieved the Highest Certified British Sales' at the Ivor Novello Award ceremony in 1965. 'Can't Buy Me Love' was also awarded 'The Most Performed Work of the Year'. 

McCartney attended and accepted the awards on behalf of him and Lennon. Lennon chose not to attend the ceremony after the fuss caused by the Beatles being awarded MBEs which prompted McCartney to accept one of the awards with: "“Thanks. I hope nobody sends theirs back now.”
