The eighteenth century was the period in which Chinese porcelain was imported into the Ottoman Empire in greater numbers to supply the demand from a burgeoning mercantile class. Its popularity spawned imitations as can be seen in much of the Kutahya pottery produced in this century. The unusual handle on this jug imitates the form of a twisted rope, an early and basic mode of applying a handle. This is contrasted with the luxurious association to Chinese wares. The lid features a tombak finial.
