FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, 4to (268 x 204mm.), folding engraved map and 65 engraved plates (of 66; some double-page or folding, 2 hand-coloured), illustrations in the text, 2 errata leaves and 2 advertisement leaves at end of volume 1, contemporary specked

Dodwell undertook two Grecian tours. The first with Sir William Gell in 1801 to the Ionian Islands and the Troad, the second in 1805-1806 during which he bribed the Turkish authorities to gain access to the Acropolis, and suffered as a prisoner of war at the hands of the French, but was permitted to explore mainland Greece and to revisit the Ionian Islands.
