The present lot was presented as a trophy to the second division runner up of the third annual Advertising Golf Tournament in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in 1907. A January 19, 1907 article in The Pinehurst Outlook details both the energetic and competitive spirit of the event, as well as the merriment of the "Advertising Men" who played the tournament. According to the article, the runner up of the second division was C. P. Fay of Chicopee Falls, who was defeated by his opponent by a single stroke in what was reported as "the match of the day." Fay took home the present lamp as his prize, which is documented in a photograph of the tournament's trophy table in The Pinehurst Outlook.
