Circle of Guido Reni

This painting derives inspiration from one of Reni's most popular subjects, the Penitent Magdalene, which he developed into an idealised devotional image informed as much by Classical sculpture as by the example of Renaissance artists like Raphael. Reni's depictions of the Magdalene range from large full-lengths, such as the work in the cathedral at Volterra,¹ to smaller-scale bust- and half-lengths, like the painting in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.²
