Nathaniel Robinson has long been known as sculptor whose simulations of real-life objects are derived from utilitarian items, relieved from any branding or specificity in design. He has recently turned to painting, producing works that merge realism with abstraction, using geometric forms to suggest urban or natural landscapes and environments. Executed with a minimal, pared-down style and painted in muted, simple colors, Robinson's paintings and crafted objects express a deep ambivalence toward the limits of human perception, and function as a metaphor for the ambiguous experiences of everyday life.
Recent solo exhibitions of Robinson’s work include those at Feature, Inc., New York, NY; Devening Projects, Chicago; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. His work has been included in exhibitions at the American Academy of Arts & Letters, New York; White Columns, New York; and Martos, New York.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA.
