With a background in architecture and urbanism, and an early career as an illustrator, Marcelo Cipis deftly toys with the conventions of drawing and painting. Cipis’ work is known for borrowing heavily from the visual languages associated with modernism, high design, and advertising. By isolating and subverting these distinctive elements, Cipis produces work expressive of a singular, almost universal visual language.
Recent solo exhibitions of Marcelo Cipis’ work include those at Mendes Wood DM, São Paulo; the Instituto Tomie Othake, São Paulo; and Spike Art Quarterly, Berlin. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art, Liverpool; Galerie Loulou Lazard, Berlin; and Fujita Vente Museum, Tokyo.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA. As such, Sotheby’s will share the contact details for the winning bidders with the SCA so that they may be in touch directly post-sale.
