Pope.L is a visual and performance artist and educator whose multidisciplinary practice uses binaries, contraries, and preconceived notions embedded within contemporary culture to create artworks in various formats including writing, painting, performance, installation, video, and sculpture. Drawing on his personal experiences as both an African-American man, and what it means to be an African-American contemporary conceptual artist, Pope.L builds upon his long history of enacting arduous, provocative, absurdist performances and interventions in public spaces, applying social, formal, and performative strategies to his interests in language, system, gender, race, and community.

Recent solo exhibitions of Pope.L’s work include those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York. His work has been included in exhibitions at Hauser & Worth, New York; Rove Projects, London; and the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago. His work was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial.
