Thence by descent, Major J.H. Hudson, M.C.;

By whom sold, Christie’s, London, 16 April 1982, lot 42, (as ‘Memnon,’ a chestnut racehorse with William Scott up, wearing the colours of Richard Watt on Doncaster racecourse);

Where acquired by the present owner.

W. S. Sparrow, British Sporting Artists, United Kingdom 1922, p. 182 (possibly).

The painting shows the jockey William Scott mounted on Memnon before the Doncaster stadium. Memnon was the winner of the classic St. Leger stakes in 1825 at Doncaster. Bred and owned by Richard Watt of Burton Constable in East Yorkshire, he was a consistent winner ridden by the jockey 'Bill' Scott. He was later sold to Lord Darlington and trained in Newmarket.
