Description

A George I cut and blown glass eighteen-light chandelier, Circa 1720-25


with original trefoil shaped shackle with a series of flat-plane cut and blown glass elements to the stem, the upper tier supporting six S-shaped arms with fixed drip-pans and nozzles, the lower tier with a further twelve arms and further waisted elements below terminating in a faceted pendant decorated with beads of air, included with the chandelier are six original candleholders that are damaged and have been sympathetically restored, two arms later

129cm. high, 110cm. diameter; 4ft. 2 3/4in., 3ft. 7 1/4in.

Most likely commissioned by, or given to Henry de Nassau d'Auverquerque (1673-1754), 1st Earl of Grantham.
Gifted by Henry de Nassau d'Auverquerque to his cousins, the Van Aerssen-van Sommelsdijk family potentially for their Home, Castle Spijk.
Thence by descent until the castle was sold in 1813 to the Sweerts de Landas family who subsequently demolished the castle the following year.
The chandelier removed to the Spijk Church until its removal in 1989.
