As is clear from the extensive study and catalogue of images edited by Jaap Bolten (see Literature), the picturesque ruins of the Abbey of Rijnsburg were a favourite subject for Dutch artists through the centuries, and one that was laden with historical and national significance. The abbey had been founded in 1133, and throughout its history only accepted female members of the nobility as members, becoming the most prestigious women's religious house in Holland. In 1574, however, it was destroyed by the Spanish armies, and thereafter the ruins were widely seen as a symbolic reminder of the ultimately successful resistance of the Protestant northern provinces of the Netherlands in the face of Catholic Spanish aggression.
