From dated works, it appears that Abraham van Beijeren started his career as a marine painter, influenced by the style of Jan van Goyen, who had moved from Leiden to The Hague in 1632. By the 1650s, Van Beijeren dedicated himself entirely to painting still lifes. The present painting is a fine example of Van Beijeren's skill in painting different surface textures, effectively using light to convey the smooth and reflective qualities of the glass and metal objects. The tall gilt cup, which gives height to the arrangement and anchors the composition in the centre, is an object that Van Beijeren often includes in his paintings.
