Description
Strickland Lowry
Cumberland 1737 - 1785 Belfast
A trompe l'œil portrait of a member of the Stacpoole family
oil on canvas, unframed
51 x 40.7 cm.; 20⅛ x 16 in.
Strickland Lowry was a portrait and landscape painter who worked in England, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Two similar trompe l'œil paintings can be found in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin,1 and another in the Hunt Museum, Limerick.2 The sitter here, dressed in an embroidered silk waistcoat and a fine blue jacket, is a member of the Anglo-Irish Stacpoole family. Lowry deliberately lights the sitter and the trompe l'œil frame from the same direction (upper left), adding a further dimension to the illusion.
