Izumita Yukiya was born in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture in 1966. He started making pottery in 1995 and won the Grand Prize at the 38th and 40th Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibitions in 2000 and 2002 respectively. In 2009, he was awarded the Excellent Work Prize at the 20th Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. In 2017, Izumita’s work was exhibited at the Singapore Art Stage and the International Biennale of Ceramic Art, Belgium.
Izumita Yukiya achieved international recognition for his ‘sekisoh’ work (literally mean accumulated layers), which refers to pottery pieces imitating layered paper. The present teabowl is a perfect manifesto of how his conceptual ‘sekisoh’ is incorporated into the decorative repertoire on an everyday utilitarian object. His ‘sekisoh’ works are among the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Yale University Art Gallery.
