Elaborately decorated lacquer cup stands were used to support teabowls in monochrome with much simpler designs. Compare a slightly bigger Yuan-dynasty example in black with a highly similar proportion and design from the collection of the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Shanghai Museum, In a Myriad of Forms: The Ancient Chinese Lacquers, Shanghai, 2018, pl. 52. See also a lobed cinnabar example with similar decoration sold in these rooms, 3rd April 2019, lot 3673.
